"Buttercrush" is the seventh episode of The Powerpuff Girls, Season 1.

It first aired on Cartoon Network in the United States on December 9, 1998.

Plot[]

Buttercup develops a crush on Ace, the leader of the Gangreen Gang. Soon, the Gangreen Gang take advantage of this and end up manipulating Buttercup into putting her sisters, Blossom and Bubbles, into terrible danger.

Synopsis[]

Buttercup is in love

"Oh, no! Looks like Buttercup is looking for love in all the wrong places." -Narrator

The Gangreen Gang is causing trouble and bullying kids at the park before The Powerpuff Girls show up. Ace pretends that Snake, whom the girls had caught giving a boy a wedgie, did not know what he was doing. Buttercup develops a crush on Ace and feels sorry for him.

The next day, the girls are on a field trip to the museum when they see the gang smashing exhibits to get into a soda machine. Blossom and Bubbles fly straight away to beat them up. Ace, who had escaped from the girls' sight, makes his way to Buttercup, who had stepped back from the fight, and convinces her that the gang just wanted a soda and that the girls are being too rough with them. Buttercup saves the other Gangreen Gang members from her sisters by hiding them under a carpet. As the gang leaves, Buttercup gives Ace a soda, and in return Ace tells her she can hang out with them anytime she wants.

Buttercup is in love 2

That evening, while her sisters are asleep, Buttercup flies to the junkyard where the gang's shack is located. Snake screams at her, saying that she should not be in their hideout, but Buttercup punches him in the nose (just like Ace does often when Snake speaks out of line). That morning, Buttercup leaves after accepting the gang's invitation to come back again that night. The gang (except Ace) spend a long time saying goodbyes to her until she is totally out of sight. Ace then berates the gang and tells them she is not their friend, but in fact a tool to help them control Townsville.

That night, Buttercup returns to the gang's hideout as promised, but finds Ace to be the only one there. The four other Gangreens call the Powerpuff Girls, and Grubber imitates Buttercup's voice to fool Blossom and Bubbles into believing that Buttercup is stuck at the city dump.

Once the two girls arrive there to rescue "Buttercup", the green Powerpuff is revealed to be Grubber in disguise, then Snake drops two old cars from a magnet onto Blossom and Bubbles and activates the conveyor belt leading to the car crusher, where they are imprisoned in crushed car cubes. They are then picked up by the same magnet that dropped the cars and are about to be dropped into a vat of boiling liquid.

Butterup is sorry

While jamming with Ace, Buttercup, at first unable to hear her sisters over the loud rock music, accidentally punches a hole in the wall, revealing them about to get dropped into the vat of boiling liquid. Scorned, Buttercup quickly saves her sisters and beats up Snake, Lil' Arturo, Grubber, and Big Billy, saving Ace for last. Ace claims he was dragged into the plan, but Buttercup, ignoring his excuses, beats him up with much more rage and ferocity than the rest of the gang.

When Blossom asked what happened, Buttercup only tells them she is sorry and hugs both of her sisters with the Narrator saying they forgive her, and the episode ends.

Trivia[]

  • Morals:
    • Be careful who you develop feelings for, as they may not be what they seem.
    • Don't hang with the wrong people.
  • The only dialogue said by Buttercup in the whole episode is "I'm sorry", at the end.
  • This is the first appearance of The Gangreen Gang, excluding the intro in Whoopass Stew.
  • The girls are sleeping in their regular attire than their usual nightgowns in the bed, much like in Daylight Savings. Also, Buttercup is still in her shoes.
  • In this episode, Grubber does a poor impersonation of Buttercup. However, in Telephonies, he was able to perfectly mimic the Mayor and Ms. Bellum. It is possible that he either improved over time or he can mimic some voices better than others.
  • Ace gets his revenge on Buttercup beating him up in Moral Decay, where he and many other villains beat her up for knocking their teeth out.
  • In The Powerpuff Girls Movie, the Girls briefly encounter the Gangreen Gang, but it is unknown why they have no memory of them in this episode. It is likely because of the encounter they had was not very long.
  • In the Cartoon Network Game Fusion Fall, Ace is also said to be Buttercup's boyfriend. Buttercup's crush on him is also mentioned twice in "Aspirations".
  • This is the first and only episode in which Lil' Arturo was voiced by Carlos Alazraqui.
  • It is possible that when Blossom ended up getting trapped in a car cube along with Bubbles, her hair also got stuck in the cube.
  • It is unknown how Blossom and Bubbles were freed from the car cubes after the end of the episode. They were most likely freed by Buttercup using her superpowers.
  • Even though the girls were credited for saving the day at the end, it was technically only Buttercup who saved her sisters.

Goofs[]

  • When Blossom and Bubbles arrive at the junkyard to look for what they assume is Buttercup, which is Grubber, his long hair vanishes briefly.
  • Before Buttercup sees her sisters in danger, she punches a small hole in the wall, but in the next shot, it looks as though she knocked down the entire wall.
