PPG Adult Humor

Adult Humor is a recurring theme in The Powerpuff Girls, wherein, despite the show being for kids, the show will sneak in several subtle innuendos and jokes that reference to mature topics that will fly over the heads of their younger audience members but will be understood by the adults watching or the kids, when they grow up.

  • The plot of "Mojo Jonesin'" is a metaphor for drug addiction, with Mary, Joey, Jeff, and Kim going into a dark alleyway and meeting Mojo Jojo, who's dressed in a trench coat and offers them some Chemical X. The kids get addicted to Chemical X and behave in a way that clearly mirrors a drug addiction. The episode ends with the kids learning that when someone like Mojo Jojo offers them something like Chemical X, what they should do is just say no.
  • In "Something's a Ms.", Miss Bellum (who is actually Sedusa in disguise) comes into The Mayor's office and asks him for the day off. The Mayor refuses at first, but Miss Bellum seduces him by grabbing his hand, while he's holding a broken pencil and sticking it into a pencil sharpener, which makes him feel very pleased.
  • In "Criss Cross Crisis", The Gangreen Gang had switched bodies with a group of teenage girls and ended up in their room. In the background, a tampon is seen lying on the floor.
  • In "Bought and Scold", Sedusa is described by the Narrator as "naughty", while she appears on screen doing a suggestive pose, facing her butt toward the screen.
  • The plot of "Candy is Dandy" features the girls getting addicted to candy the same way one would get addicted to drugs.

    • One of the flashback scenes showed Dick looking through a telescope to spy on some girls in their sorority building having a sleepover in their underwear.
  • In "Members Only", E-Male embarrassingly loses a race to Bubbles and Valhallen jokes that "His PPP connection has been severed."

  • In "Superfriends", the Powerpuff Girls introduce Professor Utonium to their new friend, Robin. Bubbles says that The Professor created them in his laboratory by accident. Professor Utonium is shocked to hear this and his eyes widen.

  • In "'Twas the Fight Before Christmas", Santa Claus puts Princess Morbucks on the permanent naughty list for life, along with the rest of the most evil people in the world. One of the names listed on the permanent naughty list was "Adolph Shicklegruber", which is a reference to Adolf Hitler, as "Adolph" is a different way of spelling his first name and "Shicklegruber" was Hitler's father's maiden name before he unconventionally underwent his wife's last name.
  • It's long been in dispute that "See Me, Feel Me, Gnomey" heavily featured religious undertonez, with a hippie character looking similar to Jesus Christ, the metal beams of destroyed buildings looking like burning crosses, and the garbs worn by the followers of The Gnome looking similar to Christian worship attire. The episode appears to have a hidden satirical message, which critiques the impact religion has on society, turning people into "cattle" who lose their freedom, as explained by Professor Utonium, who is notably a scientist and is likely supposed to reject the ideology of any religion because of his own beliefs in science. This episode's alleged sacrilege has led to the episode getting banned in the United States.
    • It's also been rumored that this episode provides social commentary on Capitalism vs. Communism, with people claiming the brainwashed people being stand-ins for Communists and their red clothing being a reference to the crimson flag of the USSR. This is directly combated by Professor Utonium, saluting the American flag, as he opposed this way of living. However, this is currently mere speculation and has not been confirmed by anyone on the show.
  • In "Aspirations", Sedusa tells The Gangreen Gang that if they do her bidding for her, she'll give them a special "reward". It's never specified what this "reward" is, but at the end of the episode, she doesn't give it to them.
  • In "West in Pieces", a bait and switch gag features Buttercup with what appears to be a cigarette in her mouth, only for her to take it out and reveal that it's a lollipop.
    • One of the buildings in the background is titled "J. Soup and Broth L.", which is a pun on "Brothel".
  • In "The Powerpuff Girls Rule!!!", Mojo Jojo gets sent to prison and sings a song. After the song, a big muscular cellmate puts his arm around him and romantically tells him how beautiful his song was, causing Mojo's eyes to widen in fright.
  • In one Cartoon Network bumper, Mojo Jojo is at a live action zoo, shouting at a silverback gorilla, "You are not the alpha male! I, Mojo Jojo am the-" Only to stop when the silverback stands at full height and he looks down at his crotch level. "...alpha..." Afterwards, he tosses a pebble and mumbles sadly to another gorilla, "It isn't fair he gets all the girls."
  • In one Cartoon Network bumper where the Powerpuff Girls save Aquaman and Wonder Woman from the Legion of Doom, Wonder Woman congratulates the girls and tells them they are developing into quite the superheroes. Bubbles says they wish to be just as developed as her. The Legion of Doom then begins to laugh as Wonder Woman blushes and covers her chest region with her hands.
  • In “The Powerpuff Girls Movie”, when Hota Wata is introduced why he should rule the world over Mojo Jojo, he finishes his speech with “because I don’t give a-“, but he is interrupted by Mojo Jojo, who says “watch your mouth!”, as if he nearly said “I don’t give a damn" or possibly another swear word.

This episode is about the Powerpuff Girls waking up after overdosing on candy and trying to remember what happened during their sleepover party.
  • In "Painbow", Blossom, Bubbles, and Allegro start twerking.
